Fela Ransome-Kuti & The Africa 70's fantastic album Confusion suitably displays the Afrobeat sound. Opening with playing that would be at home on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, the instrumental side of the LP offers up a polyrhythmic slab of deftly played dark funk that is cleanly executed. The lyrics, centered on the "Confusion" of post-colonial existence in Nigeria in the 1970s, are not angrily delivered, but nonetheless possess some fire. This is an excellent introduction to Fela Kuti's vast discography.
